As the holiday season approaches, many of us long to rediscover the peace of Christmas.  Amidst the excitement, anticipation, endless to-do lists, and hustle and bustle, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing the heart of what makes this season truly magical.

If you’re like me, you may have struggled with the pressure to create the “perfect” Christmas (just like Clark Griswold). But what if I told you there’s a way to let go of the stress and embrace the true peace of Christmas, filled with joy, love, and connection (and before the SWAT team crashes through your windows)?

Reflecting on the Peace of Christmas

For me, the heart of a peaceful Christmas lies in reflecting on the birth of Jesus Christ. His arrival brought hope, love, and joy to the world, and that’s what this season is truly about.

Whether your reflections center on faith, family, or community, taking a moment to pause and be grateful for life’s blessings can bring incredible clarity. By focusing on what matters most, you’ll find less stress and more meaning in your celebrations.

The Science Behind the Peace of Christmas

If you’ve been in my world for any amount of time—or read my book, Your Next Chapter: Dream It. Design It. Live It.—you know how much I geek out over how the brain works and how we’re wired as humans. There’s something truly fascinating about the ways our brains respond to rituals, routines, and connections.

This is why I loved a passage I recently read in a Live Science article:

“Indeed, there are plenty of reasons to value family rituals. Research shows that they can provide various psychological benefits, helping us enjoy ourselves, connect with loved ones, and take a respite from the daily grind.”

It’s no wonder the rituals of the season—whether it’s making homemade noodles, walking along the beach, or gathering around the table for a simple meal—can leave such a lasting impression.

When we lean into these moments, we’re not just creating memories; we’re also nourishing our mental well-being. Science supports what many of us already feel in our hearts: meaningful traditions can bring peace, joy, and connection during the holidays.

Giving the Gifts That Matter

What if the best gifts this Christmas didn’t come wrapped in shiny paper and bows? The gifts of love, compassion, and kindness are the ones that leave a lasting impact.

  • Volunteer at a local shelter.
  • Spend time with someone who feels alone.
  • Share your talents, like my tradition of making homemade noodles for post-holiday turkey soup.

These gifts from the heart create memories that outshine anything material.

Creating Moments of Peace

Let’s reclaim the calm amid the chaos this Christmas. One of my favorite traditions when I lived on the Oregon coast was taking long walks on the beach with my family (Bouvier family members included). Those serene moments reminded me that the peace of Christmas isn’t found in extravagant celebrations, but in the quiet moments of reflection and connection (unless we were trying to keep Kaya from chasing birds and Jacmel from getting too close to the powerful waves).

Try these simple ways to nurture peace in your life:

  • Practice mindfulness or meditation.
  • Take a walk in nature.
  • Indulge in a creative hobby.

Even a few minutes of calm can restore balance and bring you closer to the peace of Christmas.

Connecting Through the Peace of Christmas

What makes the season special isn’t the perfect party or gourmet meal—it’s the people we share it with. Instead of stressing over the details, focus on creating genuine connections with those you love.

Share stories. Laugh together. Let go of the need for perfection and embrace the beautiful imperfection of your relationships. You might be surprised how this shift transforms your holiday experience.

What Does the Peace of Christmas Look Like for You?

Hit reply, leave a comment or send me a message through my website to share your favorite traditions, moments of reflection, or acts of kindness. Your story might just spark joy or inspire someone else.

I’ll be compiling these beautiful ideas into a future blog (anonymously, of course) to show how we can all uplift and inspire one another this holiday season. I’d love for you to be part of it!
