The Journey to Rediscovering Your Authentic Self
Retirement is often painted as a time of rest and relaxation—a chance to finally slow down. But for many of us, this transition is anything but restful. After 30 years as a government/public affairs executive, my identity felt deeply tied to my career. Walking away from that role left me feeling lost. My sense of purpose and identity had been so wrapped up in what I did that I struggled to see who I was without it.
It wasn’t until I realized that my career was just a chapter of my life, not the entirety of my story, that I began to rediscover my authentic self. My true identity wasn’t defined by my career; it was rooted in my strengths, passions, and values—qualities that had always been there, waiting to be rediscovered and used in new ways.
Why Your Authentic Self Is the Key to Fulfillment
Life is a series of chapters, each bringing its own transitions, challenges, and opportunities. The key to navigating these changes is understanding that your authentic self remains your foundation. While roles, responsibilities, and environments may shift, the essence of who you are—your talents, strengths, values, and passions—remains steadfast.
For me, it was about reminding myself of my strengths. Connecting with others and inspiring change are two of them, but it’s also writing and being creative. These strengths didn’t disappear when I retired. Instead, they became the tools I used to build a new chapter, one focused on helping other women navigate their own transitions and rediscover their authentic selves.
Writing as a Lifelong Expression of My Authentic Self
Writing has always been one of my strengths and a key expression of my authentic self. While I didn’t journal in my younger years, I honed my ability to craft impactful messages during my career. I took complex issues in the electric utility and hydropower industry and made them accessible, informing and educating diverse audiences. Writing was a way to connect, influence, and make a difference—and it continues to be just that in this new chapter of my life.
Now, in retirement, I’ve had the opportunity to channel this passion into writing and publishing books. My second book, Free to Be Me: Break Through the Lies to Uncover the True You, launches on Amazon today. It represents not only my journey but stories from 24 other amazing unstoppable women of influence. In just a few hours, this has become a guide for others who are ready to rediscover their authentic selves. You can grab your copy (or copies if you want to share with others) here!
How Embracing My Authentic Self Led to My Second Book
When I started this new chapter, I published my Amazon best-seller, Your Next Chapter: Dream It. Design It. Live It. That book (you can find on my website) laid the foundation for everything that followed, including my blog, free resources, and my Retirement Reimagined Academy online courses.
With Free to Be Me, I took a deep dive into one concept I cover in my first book and in my Retirement Reimagined work. This latest book focuses on how embracing your authentic self can lead to a more fulfilling retirement, offering practical tools and insights for anyone ready to move from lost to found.
Practical Steps to Rediscover Your Authentic Self

Final Thoughts
Retirement isn’t the end of the story; it’s a new chapter waiting to be written. For me, it’s been a journey of rediscovery—of reconnecting with my authentic self and embracing the possibilities ahead. Writing, a constant in my life, has been the bridge from one chapter to the next, allowing me to inspire others and leave a lasting legacy.
As you navigate your own transitions, remember that your authentic self is your guide. Embrace it, and trust that each new chapter holds the potential for growth, fulfillment, and purpose.
