1. The Retirement Mindset Wisdom of Jimmy Buffett

I was driving the other morning, listening to No Shoes Radio, when the song came on. It made me smile… and it made me think.

On the surface, it’s classic Buffett: cheeky, rebellious, a little sun-soaked. But underneath the fun is a message that means everything—especially for women navigating life after retirement:

Growing older is inevitable. But growing up? That’s a choice.

If you’re struggling with your retirement mindset, this song might hold the key to unlocking a bold new perspective.

That sentiment isn’t just mine. A writer for the Times Gazette reflected on the same song, noting that Buffett’s lyrics aren’t just about age—they’re about outlook. He writes, “Growing older happens. Growing up? That’s optional. Don’t let the world tell you how to age.” His piece reminds us that Buffett’s brilliance was in giving permission to live boldly, even while graying.

2. Let the Winds of Time Blow Over Your Head

One of my favorite lines is:

“Let those winds of time blow over my head…”

When I first retired, I had a hard time letting go of titles, roles, and identity. I felt unseen, uncertain, even irrelevant. That lyric became a lifeline: don’t fight time—but don’t let it define you either.

Instead, let it pass over you while you keep living—curious, creative, alive. That’s an amazing retirement mindset to have, right?

3. Why Living While You’re Livin’ Matters

Jimmy sings:

“I’d rather die while I’m livin’ than live while I’m dead.”

Too many women retreat after retirement—not physically, but emotionally. They go through the motions without engagement. Jimmy’s line is a declaration: choose presence. Choose curiosity. Choose adventure.

I’ve done wild, joyful things—some planned, some not—but each reminded me that life is meant to be lived, not just endured.

4. Physical Decline Is Real—But So Is Spirit

Let’s be honest: aging brings aches. After spending four days managing the hospitality suite at the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club dog show, trust me—I could feel every year.

But here’s the thing: when your spirit is lit, your body becomes secondary. Whether running agility courses with my dogs or learning something entirely new, I choose energy, meaning, and joy.

Just because you’re growing older doesn’t mean your soul has to exit the dance floor.

5. How to Create Your Own Growing Older Mindset

Jimmy didn’t buy into “acting your age.” He believed in acting like yourself. Here’s how you can do the same:

  • Shed external expectations. Retirement doesn’t require conformity.

  • Stay curious. Try something new—even if it feels uncomfortable.

  • Follow your joy. You’ve earned the right to live intentionally on your own terms.

6. Want More Inspiration Like This?

If reading this sparked something inside you, you’re not alone.

Thousands of women are quietly questioning the traditional script for aging—wondering if there’s something more waiting beyond the titles, routines, and expectations.

💬 Author Note

Jimmy Buffett was one of my all‑time favorite musicians. I saw him in concert multiple times (the best one at The Gorge in George, WA), and his music has always reminded me to stay curious, play, and remain joy‑centered. Hearing “Growing Older But Not Up” recently reminded me why I do this work—and why it matters.
