Now What?


That’s a question all of us ask ourselves after (or during) a major life transition.

Retirement, divorce, a career change, moving, having kids, kids leaving the “nest”–navigating life after a major transition can get messy. Really messy!

There may even be times you look in the mirror and don’t even recognize the person staring back at you.

That loss of identity is a lot more common than you think. Who you are today is often deeply rooted in the past, with your spouse, your children, your career, or even your community involvement. When a transition changes that, it can be confusing and lonely.

It feels like someone drove you out into the middle of nowhere, pushed you out of the car without a map, and said, “Good luck.”

Passion Planner Time Management


I get asked these questions all the time. “How do you stay so organized and what time management system do you use?”

For several years, I’ve used the Passion Planner. It’s laid out perfectly (in my opinion) so you can dream big (your vision), set and break down goals by month, add weekly and daily tasks, and spend time reflecting and adjusting at the end of every month.

Why do I believe time management is important?

As John C. Maxwell, American author says, “If your habits don’t line up with your dream, then you need to either change your habits or change your dream.” Effective time management helps you focus on your dreams and create habits that help you achieve and live them.

No matter how organized you are, you still only get 24 hours in a day. That doesn’t change. If you struggle to fit everything into your day, you may need to learn how to work smarter, not harder.

Planning and managing how you spend your 24 hours can make all the difference in the world in maintaining a healthy, stress-free balance between your work and personal life.

Sunday is my day to have a staff meeting with myself. The first thing I do is review my goals—both personal and professional—because I want to be sure the activities I have planned for the week support them. If they don’t, then they don’t get “priority status.”

Then I transfer the activities and appointments I’ve penciled in on my monthly calendar for the upcoming week to my weekly calendar, making sure to label them accordingly with colored pencils, like pink for personal activities, teal for personal development, and green for income-producing activities.

As I’m transferring from my monthly to weekly calendar, I think about specific tasks that might need to be done in preparation for the event and jot these tasks down on the weekly calendar as well.

Next, I take a good, hard look at my week. I block out a realistic amount of time for each activity and note the time I’ll shut things down for the day. I really enjoy my work, but since I work from home, I can get totally wrapped up in a project and forget all about the time and importance of maintaining a good balance between work and personal life.

So now I’m ready for my week. And it will be productive because I’ve already made sure my activities are aligned with my goals (both personal and professional) and my week is packed with activities that I’ve deemed “priority status.”
